Decoders for x264 vfw Hello
I am sorry for my bad English. I wish to state the idea.
Well to make codec with decoder, because many users do not understand debugging ffdshow and because so easier to distribute x264 among people. Except for that it allows as well as other codecs (for example XviD) to cut and stick together in such program as VirtualDub

Hi,
Too much work for nothing imo...:) Plus, x264 hasn't a decoder.

Can be x264 has no decoder, but in fact ffdshow has the decoder h264! To code in x264 and to not open then a file in VirtualDub to eat badly! If to establish x264 on a computer it is necessary that installer had decoder for x264. Can take from ffdshow and pack in x264? To establish separately ffdshow it is wrong! XviD contains the decoder. I think with me many people will agree

Very few people know this, but ffdshow can be easily configured to handle VfW output of x264. Make sure you do a *complete* installation of ffdshow. Then, open up its VfW configuration, go to the decoder tab, and set libavcodec to decode H.264. If you're still unclear on what to do, see the screenshots below.
Go here:
then simply do the following:

Thanks, but I do not ask me to explain as use ffdshow. ffdshow can to decode XviD, huffyuv and others codecs, but it does not mean that XviD, DivX are established without the decoders! Only x264 has no decoder! In itself it is very wrong!
Really x264 will be coder, instead of encoder?
Igor rus- 10-18-2006
Has given x264 vfw to two people, they did not begin to work with it because did not wish to establish ffdshow. It for them is complex!
All convenience x264 vfw its advantage before x264 cli Turns out vanishes, namely in it

I see your reasoning here. I have gotten other such complaints.
Would a reasonable solution be to bundle into one installer both x264 and an "AVC decoder" option which installs ffdshow.ax with the appropriate settings? Then it would be one-step only and would eliminate the complexity of setting up the decoder.
An "all-in-one" package that would remain small, but feature the encoder and decoder together! Does that sound reasonable?

Yes. You are absolutely right! A Plenty of people argue so! It would be reasonably and correctly. The majority of users will be delighted to it! Thanks!

encoder and decoder Yes, I think it is very useful if we have a package to encode and decode video at the same time. I downloaded the x264 VFW from k-lite since it is very good in video quality and tracing to this forum. It will be very nice to have a decoder and show us how to use it. In addition, I am still interested in how to include it in my own program. Please reply DTS:) Thanks a lot!

To include the decoder in your own program, make sure your installation file/program registers ffdshow.ax with x264 support (.reg file works fine). To get ffdshow.ax, just compile it from the open source ffdshow (or extract it from the installer).
I think that's what I will do with the next build on this site--package the ffdshow decoder along with the VfW, allowing the user to opt out if he/she so chooses.
Good luck to us all!

Thanks! That is a great package! When will that be coming out? I am waiting for that now :D :)

I would like to use your new VFW + ffdshow decoder for editing (muxing) already compressed x264 videos with virtualdub,
but it doesn't work. I tried both versions ( with and without included ffdshow ) and newest Virtualdub, but it doesn't show any video output in Virtualdub.
I tried that with Windows2000.

Hi. When you open your files in VirtualDub, do you have any error messages? If your video files are AVI with x264 VfW video stream and if you have installed a recent version of ffdshow and if you have gone to "VFW configuaretion"-->Decoder tab and you have enabled H264/AVC decoding with libavcodec, then you should be able to edit normally your files. If you are using MKV container with x264 VfW video stream, then you have to use VirtualDubMod instead (like I do). Just make sure that your video files are indeed x264 VfW and not CLI (if they are AVI, normally they would be VfW), by checking for example with VideoInspector (http://www.kcsoftwares.com/index.php?vtb). It should say in video codec "Intel ITU H.264", in case of VfW (otherwise it would say "ISO MPEG-4 Advanced" or something). Also, make sure that your video files can create a full and correct graph in GraphEdit. You can use this registry tweak to make it easier (just change the path to graphedt.exe to fit your needs). With a right-click in an AVI file, you will have an option "Graph it with GraphEdit".
---
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
@="Graph it with GraphEdit"
@="\"D:\\New Docs\\Useful Utilities\\GraphEdit v9.04\\graphedt.exe\" \"%1\""
---
Paste the above text in a notepad and save it as GraphEdit.reg, then execute it. If you want to, replace the AVIFile with mpegfile or MKVFile to have the same functionality with other file types too. I hope this helps.

thanks for tip about graphedit, but this doesn't help to render file in virtualdub.
In graphedit, the video can be rendered. There are no errors ;-/
HITCHER- 02-16-2007
finally i solved the problem.
It was a installed copy of mpegable AVC (i forgot, i had installed some time ago this piece of software), which prevented virtualdub from rendering. Other programs still worked with ffdshow and x264, so the problem was hard to find.
thanks again, everything works now!
