Well, thanks, KurtNoise.
As crnagora said, please, include revision number somewhere in the vfw window.
kurtnoise- 11-07-2006
Could you include the revision no. somewhere in the vfw window (Some guys like me are just paranoid -> "No Version Number ? Oh god...maybe I'm using something old *shrieeek" ;)
Check out the Bitrate tab...:)
DeathTheSheep- 11-07-2006
Yes, VirtualDub's "About" button and the bitrate tab of the VfW itself (italic font) should report the revision.
Anyway, just to make it official, REVISION 600 IS OUT. Nothing revolutionary in this incremental release. Check the main page (DeathTheSheep United) for more info.

:( And when there will be a decoder?

Already exists by using ffdshow...

It is not good! x264vfw the unique codec which has no in the complete set decoders
kurtnoise- 11-08-2006
well if it's not good enough for you, then code it by yourself and stop to complain.

You strongly are mistaken! I am able to use ffdshow, but for distribution among other people it very much harms! Many people wish to unpack and more to do nothing. For this reason the container "avi" is popular among the big number of people! I code video in x264vfw only for other people that they have included video and did not think as it to reproduce

Is x264 VFW do both encoding and decoding, or just decoding? Hi, D:) I am new to this board. I just downloaded x264 VFW from k-lite package. I found it is very easy to use. The quality is good. I have a couple questions: 1) Is the x264 VFW just an encoder or both encoder and decoder? If I want to include it into a program, how can I do that? Is there any open source code that I can download? Or interface that I can call from? Thanks a lot! -Goodman

The VfW currently is only an encoder (and thus, as some members have pointed out, doesn't truly deserve the tile "codec"). However, there is a great open source VfW decoder (ffdshow) which is easy to install. I will see about packaging this with the codec in future builds.
As for calling the VfW within a program, yes, this is very possible. Just check out the API from here: https://trac.videolan.org/x264/browser/trunk/encoder/encoder.c?rev=600&order=name&desc=1
line 320 and below (or so I believe... could be wrong).
The decoder (ffdshow) can be controlled via the registry (and thus .reg files).

ffmpeg seems having x264 as well. What are the difference of ffmpeg and x264 VFW. I just read sth on x264 CLI, it says CLI can do more options that VFW can not do. What is your opinion on this? It seems to me that CLI really does not have good enough GUI. I the gui I tried are pretty bad. VFW seems very good on this.

Hello, I've just installed this encorder I found out today ( i was stopped in 583 vfw released), I'm just making my first encoding with this. Thanks for your job!
Anyway, why do they stopped releasing x264 vfw? I mean, if it doesn't work with VMD anymore, how can you encode? And do you think that encoding with vfw is better or worse?
Thanks

Why ffdshow does not include x264 in their package? DTS, you mentioned you want to include ffdshow in VFW package. I found that ffdshow has all the encoders such as xvid except x264. Do you know why they do not include x264 in the package?
Thanks, GM

Most of the options the CLI can do that the VfW cannot are either very minor or relate specifically to CLI usage. There are a slew of GUIs out there for the CLI version, but all are inconsistently updated, frequently very buggy, unstable, huge resource hogs, require installation of other programs/frameworks just to run, etc (MeGUI comes to mind, hehe).
Not to mention their inherent incompatibility with the vast majority of encoding applications to date (notably VirtualDub, but any and all VfW-encoding apps don't work with them either).
The VfW does have the most user-friendly but still compatible and up-to-date GUI so far, but there are other (emerging?) GUIs sprouting up which mimic this GUI, but made specifically for the CLI. I know of one that actually uses my guide as its instructions! :D
My thoughts are as follows: if it works, it's pretty, and it does the job well and comfortably, stick to it. That's VfW for me, but even it has its irks since there's no "perfect" solution for everybody.
Like DQ's ad says: DO what tastes right. (...or "do what suits your tastes," in this situation). :)

I really don't know why ffdshow doesn't include it, but I suspect it has something to do with licensing (incompatible OS licenses, perhaps?). If not, it could be that x264 simply isn't easy to integrate into its "libavcodec" base.
Actually, when I used ffvfw for a while, x264 was indeed an option, and was included. Maybe things have changed... But I do know ffdshow still decodes it like a charm, whether x264 is included or not ;)
