VLC won't play encoded file Windblows XP
Dual core X64 Athlon 4800+
La-*test*-('") DTS_x264 package installed
Source file - 720p MPV - 51 seconds
VirtualDubMod used - single pass quality = 15
File size created - 506 MB
When attempting to play back in VLC, the first complete frame is seen at the start and from then on, VLC will attempt to update the display many frames later, but it is garbage. The DD5.1 audio plays just fine.
An XviD encoding, at the highest quality single pass encoding, created a 572 MB file that VLC had no trouble at all playing.
VirtualDubMod will load the file it just created and will play it (not in realtim though)
Is VLC not using the x264 codec? If not, how do I get it to use it?

I'm sorry, I don't develop VLC, so I'm not quite sure what the problem is here.
Try extracting the audio and video streams from your AVI with YAMB, then muxing them into an MP4 (also with YAMB).
The process should take seconds, and I'd be interested to hear the results.
Also, it would help to tell me what settings you used, in case a certain combination of settings caused VLC to choke.
